MUSIC AT RED HAT

That first cold and snowy winter on Main Street was a challenge for our fledgling bistro. Maybe a little music on Wednesday nights would encourage people to venture out? The answer came in the form of a beautiful burst of energy named Micheline Van Hautem, who wandered into Red Hat on a day trip from Manhattan. As luck would have it, we learned the Belgian Ms. Van Hautem was a singer whose specialty was the music of Jacques Brel and Ediaf Piaf. She was hired on the spot and performed weekly for years before returning to Europe. She now sings at Red Hat whenever her schedule brings her to New York, usually twice a year. At the same time, our good friend Arnold suggested some veteran jazz musicians based in Tarrytown and that’s how we met the brilliant saxophonist Carmen Leggio, Bill Crow and his giant bass, and Hiroshi Yamazaki on piano. The trio was an instant hit and thus began Wednesday night Jazz at Red Hat. Glenda Davenport, a fabulous jazz singer, now joins Bill and Hiroshi twice a month. Sadly, our dear friend Carmen passed away in 2009. We’ll be forever grateful for having known him.
